Volunteer Note-taker Program

How to Request Notes:

Note: It is very important for students and instructors to discuss which accommodations may be necessary based on the structure of the course (online, hybrid or in-person). Some accommodations may already be built into online course design, while other accommodations may need to be provided on an individual basis.

STEP 1) Deliver your Accommodation Letters to each of your instructors:

Along with your accommodation letter, there will be a note-taking Guidelines Handout which explains the note exchange process. This handout must be delivered to your professor. Failure to follow through with these steps in a timely manner may result in a delay in using your accommodations.

STEP 2) Talk to your instructor about receiving notes:

You must inform the course instructor for which you will need notes before requesting this module. They may have resources available to you instead of a volunteer’s notes that could be suitable.

STEP 3) Ask for a volunteer:

If you and your professor have spoken about your accommodations, and a volunteer note-taker is needed, refer them to the Notetaking Guidelines Handout for more information.

STEP 4) Click 'Yes' in the 'I require a note taker' column:

The note-taking accommodation is to supplement not substitute the notes you already take in lectures. Peer notes do not extend to readings or assignments required for courses. You are still responsible for attending lectures, taking notes, attending any lab or discussion sections, and completing all requirements of the course.

When a note-taker is available, a button reading ‘Select a Note-taker’ will appear in the Note-taker Availability column. You can then view sample notes and choose a note-taker. The column that reads ‘My Lecture Notes’ will not change if you do not choose a note-taker.

If you do not need a note-taker please cancel your request by changing the ‘Yes’ in the 'I require a note taker' column to ‘No’.
